T4 Tip: No Need to hit “.COM” button in iPhone’s Safari
July 27, 2007 by Michael Manna · Leave a Comment
While typing on the iPhone is an arguably difficult / easy process depending on who you are, I figured out a handy tip for saving at least one button press – as long as you’re going to a .com site. Just like a real browser, it appears that the iPhone will allow you to type in most .com URLs without having to type the actual .com or pressing the button. Simply press Go after typing the site name and MobileSafari should automatically insert the .com for you. It’s worked in every site I’ve tried so far at least. A mere savings of one button press to be sure, but in my opinion, shaving off even one repeated key press can amount to a lot of saved time after a while.
Helio Ocean supports Microsoft Exchange
July 27, 2007 by Michael Manna · Leave a Comment
In addition to the countless email and communication options present on the Helio Ocean already, Exchange will finally grace the device. Look forward to full contact, calendar and email sync with the new software. What should happen is, in your messages list, a “Microsoft Exchange” email box will appear and you would just click on that, and download the software enhancement. That’s it! Currently available as a 60 day beta trial, the full version will go for $9.99/month after this time period. Additionally, get set for Helio File Viewer which works hand in hand with your new Microsoft Exchange mailbox. It will allow the viewing of popular document types like .doc, .ppt, .xls, and .pdf attachments.
Tethering on iPhone?
July 27, 2007 by Michael Manna · Leave a Comment
I just saw this post on boygeniusreport.com…..so don’t blame me if something bad happens to your iPhone:

Some clever developers have figured out a way to tether your iPhone to your OS X-equipped computer. Granted, you’ll be limited to the ultra slow EDGE network, possibly violate AT&T’s Terms of Service, not to mention that you’ll be installing a piece of homebrewed software on to your $500-600 device. If you’re still game, read on. Nate True, the brilliant mind that brought the remote desktop to your iPhone, seems to have done it a again. Through a series of steps that are outlined clearly on his site, he’s made it possible for iPhone users to utilize their phone’s internet connection by way of the wired cable connection. It’s not for the faint of heart, as the process demands a certain level of technical proficiency, but if you’re not scared off by a wee bit of internal fiddling, it’s certainly worth a shot. That being said, don’t say we didn’t warn ya’, so don’t come running our way if your slick phone turns into a slick brick.

”If” I Did It is a book by O. J. Simpson, in which he puts forth a hypothetical description of the murders for which he was acquitted in a 1995 criminal trial, but found financially liable for in a civil trial. The book was announced in mid-November 2006 for a November 30, 2006 release, but intense public criticism led to the cancellation of the book’s publication and a related television interview, both from divisions of News Corporation (HarperCollins/Regan Books and Fox Broadcasting Company, respectively). According to a Newsweek story, all 400,000 printed copies were recalled for destruction, save for one locked away in a vault at News Corp.[1]. One copy did show up on eBay on January 15, 2007, with a starting bid of $1500, and sold for over $65,000 fueling speculation about whether News Corp. was able to destroy all printed copies.[citation needed] James Wolcott of Vanity Fair obtained a “pristine hardcover” of the book for a review published in January 2007.[2]. The book has escaped into the free internet domain where it is available for download from a wide variety of BitTorrent sites. Moreover, Canadian publisher Barclay Road, Inc, through its subsidiary, Lifetime Books, Inc, is negotiating to publish the book. [3]. Accordingly, “If I Did It” is currently available on www.amazon.com, and potentially other online sources, for expected shipment in August 2007, through Lifetime Books, Inc.

If you are considering the purchase of a new Apple Computer, I’m sure you are concerned that you may not time your purchase correctly. Everyone who has ever bought a technology-based product, especially a computer, always fears that the newer item will be released the next day. Well, MacRumors has a buyer’s guide that shows all the info you need before deciding if it’s time to take the plunge. Go over to macrumors.com and check it out. The site saved me from buying a 24″ iMac yesterday, so check it out.
MacBook Pro EFI Firmware 1.3, Firmware Restoration CD updates
July 14, 2007 by Michael Manna · Leave a Comment
Apple on Thursday evening released an EFI Firmware update for the latest iteration of its MacBook Pro notebooks and also issued a new version of its Firmware Restoration CD for use with all Intel-based Macs.
MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.3
MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.3 [1.8MB] fixes a display issue on 2.2/2.4GHz 15-inch MacBook Pro models, which were released last month.
Apple said the update requires MacBook Pro Software Update 1.0, but otherwise provided no further information on the release.
Firmware Restoration CD 1.3
Firmware Restoration CD 1.3 [22.5MB] can be used to restore the firmware of an Intel-based Macintosh computer. However, Apple says the CD can only be used to restore the firmware after an interrupted or failed update.
“If your computer is already in this state, you’ll need to download the software and create the CD on another Macintosh computer, or you can take your computer to an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider to restore your firmware,” the company advises. “This CD can be created on both PowerPC- and Intel-based Macintosh computers.”
Firmware Restoration CD 1.3 cannot be used to return an Intel-based Macintosh computer’s firmware to a previous version if a successful update has already been performed.
Those users who feel they may need to run the Firmware Restoration software can find detailed instructions on how to create and run a Restoration CD from Apple’s support site.

Treo 700W/WX OS Update
July 14, 2007 by Michael Manna · Leave a Comment
In a bit of news that should make Citizen X happy, Palm has just released an OS update for Treo 700w/wx’s running on the Verizon network, and it includes a couple of pretty useful upgrades. The new update brings the OS up to 1.22, and in the case of the Treo 700w, includes support for DUN tethering over USB and Bluetooth, A2DP stereo Bluetooth protocol support, and one-touch access to the speakerphone and mute buttons from the today screen. There are a number of other minor improvements, but if DUN and A2DP aren’t doin’ it for you, then we’d wager to say that there’s not much hope left. The 700wx gets a number of minor upgrades, sadly. The update can theoretically be performed without wiping your device, but we would highly suggest running a back up prior to implementing the patch.

PS3 Price Drop!!
July 10, 2007 by Michael Manna · Leave a Comment
PS3 finally dropped down some in price. You can now get the 60 Gig one for $100 less than before. This is perfect timing for the drop since next week you can pick up All Pro 2K8 or NCAA Football 2008, or both like me….. Grab them now as well because supposedly the new ones will do software emulation of PS2 and PS1 games instead of having the full chipset like the current PS3!

New iMacs in August?
July 7, 2007 by Michael Manna · Leave a Comment
THe following was posted on ThinkSecret:
Apple’s next iMac revision is currently tracking for release in August, sources say. The iMac, which will be based on similar internals as the recent MacBook Pro revision, will sport a brushed aluminum enclosure and will measure just two inches thick.
The elegant new enclosure will somewhat resemble the current white iMac but is said to feature a shorter space below the actual display, where most of the internals are housed.
It was exactly 10 months ago today that Apple introduced the current iMac—which in and of itself represented only a minor speed bump from the first-generation Intel iMac, which debuted in January 2006—marking an unusually long gap between revisions. Sources originally expected the iMac upgrade to appear in June; it is unclear whether the change in date was a result of misinformation or revision to the product’s roadmap.
As previously reported, the upcoming iMac revision will debut only in 20- and 24-inch varieties, with the 17-inch model set to disappear. Speeds will top out at 2.4GHz, the current high-end for Intel’s new Santa Rosa platform.
