Blackberry Daylight Savings Time Patch
October 31, 2007 by Michael Manna · Leave a Comment
Just download the patch at blackberry.com because I’m not even going to try explain why it’s a good idea. Apparently, though, RIM has decided to give you a list of hypothetical situations. I attempted to paraphrase it, but it made my head spin, so copy and paste seemed like the way to go:
Risks of not upgrading the BlackBerry environment
Appointments and their reminders might appear 1 hour late on your BlackBerry device if the appointments start in one of the following windows in any year:
Between the second Sunday in March and the first Sunday in April (for example, March 11 2007 to April 1 2007)
Between the last Sunday in October and the first Sunday in November (for example, October 28 2007 to November 4 2007)
NOTE: Anyone living in or traveling to Mexico will not be impacted by the DST change as Mexico is not changing the DST start and end dates. However, any Mexico, Latin America, European or Asia-Pacific users who book meetings with US or Canadian-based users will also be impacted by this transition for those meetings unless patches are applied.
In addition to the display time on the BlackBerry® device not transitioning correctly when the new Daylight Saving Time (DST) start and ends dates occur, there is an impact to the calendar features on the BlackBerry device.
The way a calendar appointment is affected depends on whether it was created using an old DST table (i.e. no patch applied) with historical DST information or using a new DST table (i.e. after patch is applied) with the updated 2007 DST information.
Scenarios
Scenario #1: Any single instance or recurring appointments that were created using the new DST table, start in the specified windows, and display using an old DST table, appear 1 hour early.
Example 1
An appointment that starts on March 15 2007, and was created on a computer that has been updated with the 2007 DST information (including any server updates required to support the new 2007 DST table). The computer is wirelessly synchronized to a BlackBerry device that has not been updated with the new 2007 DST table.
Result: This appointment will appear correctly on the computer and 1 hour early on the BlackBerry device.
Example 2
An appointment that starts on March 20 2007, and was created on a BlackBerry device that has been updated with the 2007 DST information. The BlackBerry device is wirelessly synchronized to a computer that has not been updated with the new 2007 DST table (including any server updates required to support the new 2007 DST table).
Result: This appointment will appear correctly on the BlackBerry device and 1 hour early on the computer.
Scenario #2: Any single instance or recurring appointments that were created using the old DST table and start in the specified windows, and display using the new DST table, appear 1 hour late.
Example 1
An appointment that starts on March 23 2007, and was created on a computer that has not been updated with the 2007 DST information. The computer is wirelessly synchronized to a BlackBerry device that has been updated with the new 2007 DST table.
Result: This appointment will appear correctly on the computer and 1 hour late on the BlackBerry device.
Example 2
An appointment that starts on March 19 2007, and was created on a BlackBerry device that has not been updated with the 2007 DST information. The BlackBerry device is wirelessly synchronized to a computer that has been updated with the new 2007 DST table (including any server updates required to support the new 2007 DST table).
Result: This appointment will appear correctly on the BlackBerry device and 1 hour late on the computer.

iPhone Purchasing Restrictions

“We’re requiring a credit or debit card for payment to discourage unauthorized resellers,” said Apple spokesperson Natalie Kerris, calling the demand for the iPhone “off the charts.”
The previous limit was five iPhones per person, which tempted hackers to buy in quantity to resell or unlock them from their intended use with AT&T Mobility, reported Zdnet.
Apple believes that of the 1.4 million iPhones bought since they came on the market in late June, an estimated 250,000 were purchased to unlock them, Wired News said Saturday.
The new restrictions also are aimed at ensuring enough iPhones for increased holiday sales. Analysts estimate Apple’s iPhone manufacturing capability is restricted to no more than 500,000 iPhones a month.
MY TAKE:
This is getting ridiculous. Although in a free market, Apple has every right to do whatever they choose, I believe that they are wasting too much energy and effort on things like this. That effort could be put into more beneficial things…..like 3rd party apps before Feb. 2008. Besides, these “unauthorized resellers” are going to find a way around these roadblocks anyway.

Press Release from RIM:
RIM Introduces Facebook for BlackBerry Smartphones
New software application runs natively on BlackBerry smartphones and provides an unparalleled mobile experience to users of the popular Facebook social utility
SAN FRANCISCO, CA – CTIA Wireless IT and Entertainment 2007, Booth 1033 – Research In Motion (RIM) (Nasdaq: RIMM; TSX: RIM) today launched Facebook® for BlackBerry® Smartphones, an exciting new BlackBerry software application that enables fast, streamlined and optimized mobile access to the popular Facebook social utility using a BlackBerry smartphone. The application leverages the push-based BlackBerry system architecture and Facebook Platform to create an unparalleled mobile experience for Facebook users.
Mike Lazaridis, founder of Research In Motion, will join Dustin Moskovitz, co-founder of Facebook, to formally unveil and demonstrate the Facebook for BlackBerry Smartphones application today at the CTIA Wireless I.T. & Entertainment show in San Francisco. T-Mobile USA has been selected to be the first carrier to provide the new software application to its customers.
With the Facebook for BlackBerry Smartphones application, Facebook users can wirelessly send and view messages, photos, pokes and Wall posts. The rich, native application goes beyond browser-based access, automatically pushing notifications to the user’s BlackBerry smartphone as friends and colleagues send notes, Wall posts or pokes. The application allows users to take a photo, upload it to the site with captions and tags; quickly and easily invite friends; manage events; manage photo albums; and manage their status while on the go.
“Facebook is one of the fastest growing web destinations among BlackBerry smartphone users and it has become an important element in the evolving fabric of personal communications,” said Mike Lazaridis, President and Co-CEO at Research In Motion. “Facebook and RIM share a vision for enhanced mobile communications and social networking based on open, standards-based platforms and this has allowed us to produce a rich mobile application for Facebook users that leverages the push-based architecture, multimedia features and industry-leading usability of the BlackBerry solution.”
“T-Mobile is focused on helping people effortlessly connect with those who matter most by providing our customers with meaningful ways to stick together,” said Leslie Grandy, vice president, Product Development, T-Mobile USA. “We are pleased to be the first wireless carrier in the U.S. selected to offer this innovative service that gives customers another compelling way to stay in touch.”
“The worlds of wireless communication and social utilities, such as Facebook, continue to converge. As people look for new ways to stay connected and network with peers and colleagues, true mobile access to these types of utilities can only become more popular,” said Jill Aldort, Sr. Analyst, Consumer Research at Yankee Group. “Even at this nascent stage of the market, 19% of adult consumers who access social networks on their PCs also regularly access these same sites on their mobile phones.”
Facebook for BlackBerry Smartphones, which will be available as a free download*, makes it faster, easier and more convenient for users to stay wirelessly connected with their Facebook friends and colleagues. The application allows users to:
• Receive notifications and messages automatically – Leveraging the BlackBerry platform’s push-based architecture, notifications and messages are automatically sent to the user; the user can also set a unique alert (vibration and/or ringtone) for Facebook related content
• Quickly access essential features – Convenient onscreen icons let users quickly change their Status, upload a photo, add a friend, poke someone, write on a Wall, or send a message. Users can also quickly scroll through messages and notifications as they do with email messages
• Invite friends to join Facebook and accept new friend requests
• Quickly snap and post pictures along with a caption and tags – The photo upload feature is also integrated with the BlackBerry smartphone camera and photo management applications on the smartphone
• View the Status of friends
• Read, compose and reply to messages even while offline – If the user is out of wireless coverage, messages are queued until the user returns to an area of coverage
Facebook users will be able to download the application at www.facebook.com from their PC or BlackBerry smartphone beginning later today.

Not OS-related, but VERY IMPORTANT for Verizon Customers!!!
October 25, 2007 by Michael Manna · Leave a Comment
Verizon Wireless customers have 30 days to opt-out of a controversial data-sharing initiative the wireless carrier is starting. The customer’s proprietary network information (CPNI) is basically the phone records of your mobile; it’s a detailed list of who you called, who called you, and how long you talked. Here is a copy of the letter Make Sure to call 866-483-9500. I heard them do it on the CellPhone Junkie and it’s incredibly easy to do, so call today!

Syphone Beta Backs Up iPhone SMS
October 19, 2007 by Michael Manna · Leave a Comment

Save, archive and view your iPhone SMS messages on your Macintosh!
Syphone is a freeware Macintosh utility for use with Apple’s iPhone. The program installs on your Macintosh and does not alter the iPhone in any way. This application lets you view, save, and back up your SMS messages. With Syphone you can now archive and view SMS conversations, including those that have been deleted from the iPhone.
The iPhone has a limit on the number of SMS messages it can store at one time. If this limit is exceeded, existing conversations must be deleted in order to make room for new messages. Syphone allows you to view and/or save any of these conversations, including deleted messages. It uses the familiar iChat format to display archived SMS messages. In addition, if you have multiple iPhones synced to your computer, Syphone allows you to view and archive messages from any of the iPhones.
Syphone allows an iPhone user with a Macintosh to:
View synced iPhone SMS messages on your Macintosh
Archive SMS messages
Import/export SMS messages
View SMS messages offline in an iChat-like interface with selectable colors
Open Address Book contacts
View the number of sent and received messages for each contact
Support multiple iPhones
Ryan DuBois, a Syphone beta tester remarked, “Syphone allows me to archive and display my old text messages in a simple and attractive user interface. Plus, I don’t even have to have it open to stay up to date. I’m glad I don’t have to worry about losing those old text messages.”
Syphone is Micromat’s first iPhone-related product. It is an application that provides additional functionality we desired for our own use. We have provided it as freeware to gauge the appeal of this type of product. If the response is positive, we will consider producing a more full-featured professional version.
System Requirements:
Mac OS X 10.4 or greater.
iTunes 7.4 or greater.
iPhone
No Windows version at this time. You can check out this app and a few others offered by Micromat here
