Low-Income Residents Get High-Speed Access in San Francisco

March 28, 2008 by Yiling · Leave a Comment

logo.jpg

New York Times Blog reports that the Internet Archive, a San Francisco-based nonprofit organization, best known for its digital archiving work, will begin offering high speed access in low income housing projects. Starting with Valencia Gardens in the city’s Mission District, with 260 units. They will be connected at 100 megabits per second, which is way faster than my 6 megabits per second at home.

I’m excited about this news because maybe they’ll extend this to New York. I grew up in the public housing project, and that’s where I’m currently staying while visiting. Then maybe I won’t have to steal or borrow wi-fi use super slow dial up…

Trying out the Tilt again!

March 26, 2008 by robbiez · Leave a Comment

They tried to take it away from me, plus it’s baseball season, so I am trying out using the tilt again. I did the different fixes from our previous post about Tilt fixes, and it is working better overall. When I did the software upgrade I took Blackberry connect off, I will be putting it back on, and be interested to see if that slows it back down to where it was before.

I have used Slingplayer with it now, under wifi areas only so far. It works very good, a few hiccups when starting, but overall I like it. I will be posting over the next few weeks on it, on my different problems I had when using it on a limited basis to see if I can work around them with focusing on it.

Posting from my blackberry!

March 25, 2008 by Yiling · Leave a Comment

This is actually not what I wanted to post about, and I can’t remember what it was now, it came to me a few days ago. But I wasn’t able to access the wordpress admin on the browser on my blackberry. So I just downloaded opera mini, so now I can! I promise to post something tech news related some time soon.

Verizon SMS Rates Hike=No ETF

March 24, 2008 by Michael Manna · Leave a Comment

Recently, Verizon has raised its SMS rates to .20 per message. What does this mean? Well, if you are looking to get out of your wireless contract early, you can use this rate hike as an excuse to terminate your relationship with Verizon without incurring the huge early termination fee. Make sure to call asap. This opportunity to opt out won’t last much longer.

AirDisk now Works???

updates-march19.jpg

According to many people in MacRumor forums, the recent Time Machine/Airport update has enabled the use of a USB external hard drive with the Airport Extreme Base Station. This was, initially, supposed to be a feature of Leopard at first, was removed, and now back again. I’m very happy that Apple had decided not make everyone buy a Time Capsule and render their AEBS useless for wireless backups.

Amazon’s Apology Letter

March 20, 2008 by Michael Manna · Leave a Comment

kindle_letter.jpg

I have a Kindle and love it. It’s great to download magazines and books on the go while traveling. However, I paid a steep price because the Kindle had been completely sold out and Amazon had no idea when they would be available to ship. Well, many months later, no Kindles have yet to be available for shipping, prompting Jeff Bezos to write an apology letter and promise to ship the wireless reading devices to customers ASAP.

Texting and emailing to be in the DSM?

March 18, 2008 by Yiling · Leave a Comment

I saw this at engadget.com, and was going to ignore it, but it’s been on my mind all day. I’m not sure why I’m obsessing over this bit of news. Maybe cause I wonder how a doctor will determine when a behavior is compulsive?

dsm-iv-cover.jpg

Compulsive e-mailing and text messaging could soon become classified as an official brain illness, reports The Ottawa Citizen.

Dr. Jerald Block, a psychiatrist at the Oregon Health and Science University in Portland thinks that people who texts and email excessively have a compulsive-impulsive disorder that should be included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM)

Dr. Block says people can lose all track of time or neglect “basic drives,” like eating or sleeping. Relapse rates are high, he writes, and some people may need psychoactive medications or hospitalization. Dr. Block says about 86 per cent of Internet addicts have some other form of mental illness, but that unless a therapist is looking for it, Internet addiction is likely to be missed.

JiveTalk for BlackBerry v1.0.5 Released

March 11, 2008 by Yiling · Leave a Comment

One of my favorite things on the Curve is JiveTalk.  I’ve tried the iPhone/iPod touch version, it just doesn’t compare.  They recently released a new version, my favorite change is the little icon is now the bee.  images.jpg That’s on my home screen now.  It’s so cute!

But more importantly, here are the changes to the application, according to their blog:

The most prominent features in 1.0.5 are:

1) Ability to run JiveTalk with WIFI (BlackBerry OS 421 and above). You
do not need any data plan to use JiveTalk on your WIFI enabled
BlackBerry with OS 4.2.1 and above

2) Display picture availability for MSN,JABBER/GTALK transports.

3) Custom LED color for all JiveTalk alerts.

4) Few bug fixes such as sticky AIM Profile even after logging out of
JiveTalk, Jabber customization,Timing out of ICQ login when no buddies
are present for the account etc..

Enjoy!

I know that I’m not the best in the world at updating the blog here, probably because I spend all my time reading sports blogs. I figured that since I spend all the time doing that I really should start my own blog. Well I have at WWTBD.com and hopefully I will start sometime this week with a sports podcast. I have been adding a lot of pictures from Red Sox Spring Training and will be adding even more this week with going to 4 more games. Please take a second and give it a look, and leave feedback for me. I will have some people helping out as well hopefully. So keep reading up to see how it goes.

MacBook Air Firmware Update

March 11, 2008 by Michael Manna · Leave a Comment

Apple has released a SMC(System Management Control) update for the MacBook Air that deals with tv documented fan speed problem. I haven’t had an opportunity to intall the update because I’m on the road and don’t have my Air with me. However, on a related note, I’m writing my first post from the WordPress Mobile Admin for iPhone. Its a very cool feature that enables the T4 Show cast to post right from their iPhones or iPod Touch(Yiling).

iPhone Unlimited Plan

March 9, 2008 by Michael Manna · Leave a Comment

iphone_calling_unlimited.jpg

With the recent trend in “unlimited” as far as wireless carriers are concerned, AT&T has an official iPhone Unlimited Plan. Nothing really special here. It would have been the same as choosing the $99.99 unlimited voice plan plus data. With the iPhone plan, you are given 200 free messages. It would have really been attractive if they threw in unlimited messaging for the $119.99 asking price. Of course, no MMS or IM yet. June can’t come quick enough, can it?
