Low-Income Residents Get High-Speed Access in San Francisco

New York Times Blog reports that the Internet Archive, a San Francisco-based nonprofit organization, best known for its digital archiving work, will begin offering high speed access in low income housing projects. Starting with Valencia Gardens in the city’s Mission District, with 260 units. They will be connected at 100 megabits per second, which is way faster than my 6 megabits per second at home.
I’m excited about this news because maybe they’ll extend this to New York. I grew up in the public housing project, and that’s where I’m currently staying while visiting. Then maybe I won’t have to steal or borrow wi-fi use super slow dial up…
Trying out the Tilt again!
They tried to take it away from me, plus it’s baseball season, so I am trying out using the tilt again. I did the different fixes from our previous post about Tilt fixes, and it is working better overall. When I did the software upgrade I took Blackberry connect off, I will be putting it back on, and be interested to see if that slows it back down to where it was before.
I have used Slingplayer with it now, under wifi areas only so far. It works very good, a few hiccups when starting, but overall I like it. I will be posting over the next few weeks on it, on my different problems I had when using it on a limited basis to see if I can work around them with focusing on it.
Posting from my blackberry!
This is actually not what I wanted to post about, and I can’t remember what it was now, it came to me a few days ago. But I wasn’t able to access the wordpress admin on the browser on my blackberry. So I just downloaded opera mini, so now I can! I promise to post something tech news related some time soon.
Verizon SMS Rates Hike=No ETF
Posted by Michael Manna in News on March 24, 2008
Recently, Verizon has raised its SMS rates to .20 per message. What does this mean? Well, if you are looking to get out of your wireless contract early, you can use this rate hike as an excuse to terminate your relationship with Verizon without incurring the huge early termination fee. Make sure to call asap. This opportunity to opt out won’t last much longer.

AirDisk now Works???
Posted by Michael Manna in Consumer Electronics, Mac on March 20, 2008

According to many people in MacRumor forums, the recent Time Machine/Airport update has enabled the use of a USB external hard drive with the Airport Extreme Base Station. This was, initially, supposed to be a feature of Leopard at first, was removed, and now back again. I’m very happy that Apple had decided not make everyone buy a Time Capsule and render their AEBS useless for wireless backups.
