$200 3G iPhone Coming Soon?
April 30, 2008 by RDLee · Leave a Comment
Just thought I would pass this along for anyone interested….I am short on cell phone knowledge so maybe Michael can shed some light on this rumor…
<
Analysts are pointing to a possible cost subsidy for the next version of the iPhone, which would seriously cut costs to the consumer. This is how most phones work, because the carrier makes money on the service plan.
They are pointing to a magic number of $200 for a 3G iPhone when users sign up or renew a 2-year contract. This reduction in cost would potentially bring in so many new customers that are put off by the iPhone’s price to AT&T.
Since they would all be on a 2-year contract, AT&T makes a lot of money in the long run.

No Re-Mix for Ghostbusters theme!
April 28, 2008 by RDLee · Leave a Comment

Terminal Reality, developers of the upcoming Ghostbusters: The Videogame, has confirmed that the new game will feature the original Ray Parker Jr. theme song – plus 75 minutes of previously unheard soundtrack music. No lame modern remix after all!
“When we were doing the focus group testing, we asked people how they’d feel about a remix done by a current band. We got booed out of the place,” Brendo Goss, the game’s executive producer, said.
“So yes, we have the original, and no, we’re not messing with it,” Goss said.
No release date on the game yet, but it looks like it’s coming out on the DS, PS3, PS2, Wii and 360.

Jack Thompson on GTA4
April 26, 2008 by RDLee · Leave a Comment
This is something I read on another site that I wanted to pass along….. This guy, Jack Thompson, is a lunatic and a drama queen….. He is currently video games biggest enemy… and after reading this you will understand why!
Take-Two Interactive owns Grand Theft Auto developer Rockstar and is publishing the upcoming title. The letter was delivered to Strauss Zelnick’s lawyer, per a past settlement that only allows Thompson to communicate with Take-Two via counsel.
Thompson’s meandering letter compares Strauss to a Hitler Youth, quotes scripture, accuses him of causing the death of three Alabama police officers, questions if the Boy Scouts ever awarded him a Ted Bundy merit badge, and wishes the chairman’s mom a happy Mother’s Day.
The complete, unedited letter follows:
Mrs. Zelnick
Strauss Zelnick, Take-Two Chairman’s Mother
New York, New York Via e-mails to intermediaries
Re: Your Son, Strauss Zelnick
Dear Mrs. Zelnick:
Your son, as you may know (or maybe you don’t know), is Chairman of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc., whose most popular video games are the Grand Theft Auto murder simulator games banned in some countries but sold to children here.
Your son last week was reported to have said the following about Grand Theft Auto IV, due to be released Tuesday, April 29: “We’ve already received numerous [GTA IV] reviews, and to a one, they are perfect scores. My mom couldn’t write better reviews…” Taking your son’s thought, I would encourage you either to play this game or have an adroit video gamer play it for you. Some of the latter gamers are on death row, so try to find one out in the civilian population who hasn’t killed someone yet.
What you will see in your son’s game, if this iteration of GTA is anything like its predecessors, is incredible interactive violence aimed at police officers (whom you can shoot in the head and see the blood spray), innocent bystanders (whom you can run over with your car just for the heck of it), and of course the plentiful female prostitutes you can have sex with and then filet with a knife or stomp with your feet in order to get your money back. Experts note that the recent plethora of cop killings is caused in part by your darling son’s entrepreneurial energy. There are three policemen dead in Alabama because of Grand Theft Auto. I was on 60 Minutes about it. I hope Strauss has provided you with a flat screen tv to see the grief of the bereaved families that fills the screen.
The pornography and violence that your son trafficks in is the kind of stuff that most mothers would be ashamed to see their son putting into the hands of other mothers’ children, but, hey, your son Strauss has recently assured the world that he is “a Boy Scout, everybody knows that.” I’d love to see the merit badges that Scout Troop handed out. Is there a Ted Bundy merit badge? If so, your loving son deserves one now. It should be red and green, for obvious reasons.
With Passover having just come and gone, it is appropriate to note the following from the Old Testament, Proverbs 22:6:
“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
Mrs. Zelnick, did you train up your son, Strauss, to make millions of dollars by pushing Mature-rated video games to children? Any kid can go right to little Strauss’ corporate web site and buy GTA IV with no age verification. Strauss is even marketing the new Grand Theft Auto IV on World Wrestling Entertainment tv shows seen by millions of kids. If you trained up Strauss to do this, then shame on you.
But maybe the explanation for your son’s corporate sociopathy is to be found in Old Testament Proverb 29:15:
“The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.”
Maybe you, Mrs. Zelnick, were so taken by your handsome son that you spared the rod and spoiled the child. That would explain why he has brought you, by the way he presently acts, “to shame.”
There’s another mother you would do well to talk to. Mrs. Crump in Alabama had a son who was a police officer. He’s now dead because a teenaged boy unwittingly trained himself to kill him on Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. She has a grief she carries every day that only a mother can know. There are other such mothers in the heartland of America whose inhabitants your son simply sees as commercial targets.
Your son, this very moment, is doing everything he possibly can to sell as many copies of GTA IV to teen boys in the United States, a country in which your son claims you raised him to be “a Boy Scout.” More like the Hitler Youth, I would say. Happy Mother’s day, Mrs. Zelnick, which this year is May 11, two weeks after your son unleashes porn and violence upon other mothers’ boys. I’m sure you’re very proud.
Sincerely,
Jack Thompson

HDTV + Video Game = Money!!!
April 25, 2008 by RDLee · Leave a Comment

A new study from Frank N. Magid Associates has found that 5.5 million households purchased an HDTV set for the first time during the 2007/2008 holiday season. According to the study, 18% of HDTV purchases last year were specifically to take advantage of the high-definition signals able to be output by the Xbox 360 and PS3.
If you do plan on making the HDTV jump mainly for gaming, I HIGHLY recommend you to pick up a Samsung LCD or Plasma HDTV at least up to 32 inches for maximum quality.
Thanks for reading and “Game On”

Sprint’s “Minor” Billing Mistake
April 25, 2008 by Michael Manna · Leave a Comment

From The Consumerist:
Jessie opened his Sprint bill and nearly had a heart attack. Staring back at him was in big bold letters: COLLECTION AGENCY ALERT. After recovering, Jessie looked at his bill and nearly had a second heart attack. It said the amount due was $32,669.00. Huh? Had his cellphone been hacked? Used as a call-home payphone for a neighborhood of Tajikistan émigrés? Used by NASA as a Space Station communications channel? Take a guess and then see the answer inside…
After calling The Consumerist Sprint Executive Customer Service number (703-433-4401), it turns out that Sprint misprinted the bill for lots of people, accidentally moving the decimal two places to the right. The error has now been fixed and Jessie only owes $326.69. “One question remains though,” asks Jessie, “will debt collectors be knocking at my door for this mistake?”

MacBook Air 3G/EVDO USB Modems
April 25, 2008 by Michael Manna · Leave a Comment
After having Mickey Papillon on last night’s podcast, I began to reconsider a Sprint EVDO card. However, when I had Scott Gruby on Episode #51, he discussed how most Sprint cards aren’t compatible with Macs out of the box. Well, EVDOinfo.com has pics and details of cards that work or don’t work with the MacBook Air. These pics show cards from all wireless carriers:

I’m going to take a trip to the Sprint Store and check for the Compass 597. It looks like it would be my best bet to have a EVDO connection with my Air right out of the box. Now let’s hope I don’t have to call CS.

Sprint BB Curve Shipping May 7th?
April 24, 2008 by Michael Manna · Leave a Comment

Well, according to SprintStore.net. This is from their blog at www.sprintstore.blogspot.com:
TheSprintStore has officially received confirmation on the launch date of the BlackBerry 8330 Curve. This information was received on April 23, 2008 by an individual over the Sprint Product Launch team who stated “the delay of the launch was required to work out the remaining bugs in the Curves software.” (This individual spoke on a condition of anonymity)
So what was stated as the OFFICIAL release date?
The Curve will be available on Wednesday, May 07th 2008 for direct ship orders only! This means that orders can be placed online at www.sprint.com and through telesales on the 7th and will ship that same day from the Sprint warehouse.
Currently, we (www.TheSprintStore.Net) are offering the handset for Pre-Activations and Pre-Upgrades as we also ship from Sprint’s warehouse through a process called Value Added Distribution or “VAD” ordering.
Also on the 7th the Curve will be shipped to BrightPoint North America who then ships all of the handsets nationwide to all Sprint Corporate Store’s and Indirect Channel Master Agents. They will receive this inventory by Friday, May 09th 2008 and will have them available for activations and upgrades when they open at 10:00am!
Bottom Line:
Although you can order it online or through telesales on May 7th you won’t get it delivered until May 9th at 10:00am – 3:00pm

President

I hear word that the delay is due to Sprint TV not functioning properly on the device. I find that hard to believe because I tested it on the Pearl and it runs perfectly.

The Cell Phone Junkie 100th Episode
April 24, 2008 by Michael Manna · Leave a Comment

I have always been addicted to cell phones. Since the first smartphone I owned, the Treo 180(which I still have), the fascination and addiction to them hasn’t stopped. So, obviously, one of my favorite podcasts has been one about cell phones. The Cell Phone Junkie, hosted by Mickey Papillon and Joy Koppes, is celebrating their 100th episode this coming week and I congratulate them Anyone who hasn’t heard the podcast, please subscribe via the iTunes Store or check them out at www.thecellphonejunkie.com. Here is the official press release:
PHOENIX – April 22, 2008 – The Cell Phone Junkie, one of the nation’s leading independent podcasts devoted to the cell phone industry, will release its 100th program on April 27, 2008, according to founder and host Mickey Papillon. The free program will include special guests who are considered experts in the field of cell phones and mobile phone technology, and will be available on the website (www.thecellphonejunkie.com) as of Sunday, April 27.
“We’re extremely excited to be doing our 100th program,” said Papillon, a longtime cell phone user and an authority on mobile phone technology. “Since our inception in 2006, The Cell Phone Junkie programs have been downloaded by more than 100,000 listeners, so we believe we’re providing a valuable service to many people. Worldwide, there are approximately 3 billion cell phone users and, in some countries, cell phone penetration is actually more than 100 percent.”
Joining Papillon on the April 27 program will be co-host Joey Koppes of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Also appearing on the show are David Ciccone, Founder, www.mobilitytoday.com, of Monmouth Junction, New Jersey, Dieter Bohn, VP of Communities, www.smartphoneexperts.com, of Inverness, Florida, and Rob Walsh, Founder, www.podcast411.com and www.todayiniphone.com, of Overland Park, Kansas. All are considered experts in the cell phone industry.
Recent podcasts have dealt with such diverse subjects as the popular Apple iPhone, the $20 billion government auction of radio spectrum to industry service providers and the benefits of cell phones over traditional landline phones. A March podcast even discussed the British government’s decision to test the installation of soft padding on streetlamps in London because so many citizens have been walking into them inadvertently while talking on their cell phones.
“Obviously there is a humorous side to the cell phone industry,” Papillon said. “It’s not just about new products and software updates. The cell phone industry is changing rapidly and we receive dozens of questions about the technology, the industry and the issues.”
About The Cell Phone Junkie: The Cell Phone Junkie website and podcast were formed in 2006 by Michael (“Mickey”) Papillon, a resident of Cave Creek, Arizona and longtime cell phone user and aficionado. It is one of the nation’s most popular independent podcasts for detailed information about the industry. The weekly podcast, which has been downloaded by more than 100,000 listeners worldwide, can be accessed via www.thecellphonejunkie.com or by calling 510-495-6352.

NES Game Modded!
April 23, 2008 by RDLee · Leave a Comment

A French modder named Kotomi recently took an NOAC (NES in a chip) and modified it into a copy of Super Mario Bros.
The result?
A fully functioning Nintendo housed in a Super Mario Bros. game cartridge, complete with a tiny cartridge slot, power and reset buttons and other details. He calls it a Fami-Card.
This is the first of it’s kind and hopefully the beginning of some cool mods in the future. I would buy something like this just to show it off!
Pretty neat huh?

The Electronic Entertainment Expo is coming, folks and Sony may have a massive announcement up its sleeve.
According to the LA Times, Sony is preparing to launch an online video service through its game console PlayStation 3 as early as this summer. That makes us think they’re gearing up for an E3 announcement.
From the PlayStation blog:
“Many of you have been hearing rumblings about a video service that will allow you to download full-length TV shows and movies via PlayStation Network for North America,” wrote Peter Dille, senior vice president of marketing for Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. “While I don’t have any new announcements . . . it’s already been confirmed that we’ll be offering a video service for PS3 in a way that separates the service from others you’ve seen or used.”
